Looking unto Jesus.

Hello! How are you fighting the christian faith fight? I mean how did you fight today or are fighting right now?  From the moment you and I stepped out of the waters of baptism like our master Jesus, we began fighting (Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil).

Apostle Paul uses the word “fight” to paint a clearer and more understandable picture of what Christianity is like, but there are a number of intriguing contrasts about both the manner  of engaging in the fight and its  purpose.

Unlike in the conventional sense of it where  fighting is done by undisttractedly  facing the  enemy, and deploying one’s last strength and tactics  inorder to guarantee a victory and secure material or plastic, fame or postion, the  “fight of faith” also called the “good fight” on the other hand, targets holy living and a striving to inherit the eternal life of bliss in the bossom of our Lord  Jesus Christ after death. It is not a wrestling with flesh or blood, but  a perpetual  offensive which on lunches against the flesh and its ungodly tendencies, it’s an offensive against one’s own flesh and its numerous unending lusting against the spirit , it is a struggle against any spirit that hates that which  is called good or  God in this life. It’s  a bitter struggle against everything which seeks to soil or spoil or pervert all godly intentions or interests. However, it works with the usuage  of a very  shapely contrasting strategy  which many are either ignorant of, or  do underestimate ,and that largely might  be the reason why a number of us keep scoring low inside our rings every day.We use the wrong strategy and produce not only the wrong results but shocking ones.

The  one christian “intellectual” wages his own offensive against the enemy counting on his theological prowess, the skyrocketing number books or Christian publications he has read on this or that subject, the frightening number of times they have read through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation etc , while the other in his myopic viewpoint, from time to time strays into his logivity in the faith as his last resort,” I been in the christian faith for 35 years, so I….,” we have dealt with many pastors, and different situations, we started this church … years ago, what do I not know ? bla, bla, bla”

Well, nothing particularly wrong with any of the above,  but they, according to me fall under the strategy of “might and power” which God cautioned King Zerubabel about. The Bible makes it unequivocally clear when it says:

Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.127:2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” Psalm 127: 1 -2.

There is only one  strategy or way  (God’s own) of making it through and through  in the Christian fight or   race . Anyone who engages this tactic like apostle Paul leaves  their boxing ring or crosses the finishing line triumphantly. (2Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith…”

The principle consists of strictly and continually sticking to  Paul’s injunction contained  in Hebrews 12:1-2
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

The winning  formula unveiled by Paul here is burried in the phrase ” “looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” This tactic unveiled by Paul is  never to considered as a weapon  for the novice in the faith but for both the ” Christian big guns” and the “freshmen”. The underlying suggestion in it is that we have nothing to do apart from looking up to Jesus, there is nothing else God wants us to bring as our own qouta,

Psalm 127:2 “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”

God has already fully accomplished the fight,He simple calls us  to come and inherit the victory,  So straining ourselves to use our intellect or experience to fight  is   nothing less than pains taken  invain  because the victory for any adversary or every adversity we would ever encounter as God’s children and as far as our Christian troubles or struggles are concerned has already been won by Jesus Christ on the cross, Bible says

“… having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Colossians 2:15,

after having won the fight,He declared it finished !This also one of the outstanding things that makes Christianity the best religion so far

It effect we don’t actually have any fight to fight anymore ,and if there is   any at all, it’s a fighting from a background of victory to victory with this simple  rule,- keep ” looking unto Jesus” and not at the enemy. It’s a single  and simple rule but must be taken seriously because the enemy we deal with is our master’s  former ” mate” and not ours.Since he unequals us, we must look only to  the one who has already out matched him in the past once and for all – our saviour Jesus Christ.Satan  knows how successful we would be if  each moment we remain focused on Jesus. That is why he  has never given himself any rest. He has ever since been up or down,to or fro  using distraction and deception as his principal strategies in trying to out run or out fight the soldiers of Faith that we are.His only objective is to get the christian’s eyes off Christ as many times as possible.

Brethren let’s not stumble!

The “looking unto Jesus” strategy tells us that we are focusing on some one who has gone in the path we are in with outstanding success . Besides, it is the same approach he used in his own days,

John 5:19 “Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.”

He depended solely on his Father, There wasn’t any  thing he did  that he hadn’t seen the Father doing. That’s why there wasn’t any possibility of failing through out his life time here on earth. He looked unto  a god who doesn’t fail in any of his undertakings. He is Jehovah our His God and our God.
It is the about the same principle that Paul speaks of when he urges us to be Christ’s imitators.Elsewhere he appeals to us to set our minds  on the things that are above where Christ is seated  far above principalities and powers

The apostle in a nutshell is enjoining us to  keep steadily  looking to Jesus just the way Jesus himself looked up to the Father in his earthly days and the same way he Paul, is looking unto Christ. we should take the pain to look up to Jesus Christ , our high priest and  divine model , that is the only way we will guarantee our success. We will access eternal glory ( which is our ultimate goal of fighting) like Jesus  and Paul when we finally come to the finishing line or get out  of the boxing ring
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of  testimonies (of apostles like Paul who won the good fight of faith), let  us lay aside every human philosophy or ideology and start winning fatly every day right into eternity by simply looking unto Jesus! Shalom!
